I want a Ricoh GRD Camera Phone

Postby ZDP-189 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 5:16 pm

I was shooting another battle of the bands last night with the GX200, next to a Canon and Nikon DSLR. Looking round the room though, there was a sea of iPhone 4's. It occurred to me just then that I had never owned a phone with a camera. Partly it's because the camera feature was a low priority and I usually have at least one, if not 5 cameras on my person, but mostly because cameras on phones have never been any good. However, last night, some of them seemed to be getting reasonable images. I'm not a big fan of lightsaber and beer drinking apps so I'd like to find the ultimate camera with a phone feature. A GRD3* with a phone function would be ideal, although I'm not too keen on the phone feature reducing the number of shots I get to take.

So what am I looking for? I've read a bit about the Nokia N8, but is there a better camera with a phone?

Nokia N8 is good camera phone. I'm not sure about its speed and usability of its OS, but it takes very good photos. Can you believe it uses nearly the same sized sensor as GRDI just packed with 12MP? It sounds horrible, but it's actually better than most of existing camera phone sensors!

On the other hand, I understand the popularity of iP4 camera. I saw many pictures from it and it's impressive camera phone! Aside the limited controls and to my taste oversaturated colors, its noise reduction approach is exactly what I would like to see in Ricoh cameras. It performs mainly color noise reduction with no or very little luminance NR. The images look noisy even at low ISO, but thanks to this, they are full of details! I may be mad, but I like the sky full of noise (grain)? ;)

I owned the iPhone 3G and although its camera was nearly rubbish, it allowed me to take some very nice photos. If the money would be no problem, I would buy the iP4 right away. Not because it's iPhone, but because its camera! ;)

At the end of the day P&S cameras will be replaced by phones. Its a given.
A camera will give you macro or F2.8.
A phone will never give you aperture control. Not until mid 2014.

The camera on the iPhone 4 is pretty good and I love the photography apps. I would love to have a Ricoh app for the iPhone that might give me the kind of B&W rendering that I get from my Ricoh cameras.

I'm not sure I want anyone phoning me while I am taking that masterpiece. Maybe if you can set to voicemail while taking an image.

Looks like an R8 was drunk at a party and got sexed up by a phone.

The question is did the love-child retain it's mother's talent?

It costs a lot; around $475. :o
