Remote Control Releases for the GX200?

Postby International Angler » Sun Oct 31, 2010 8:18 am

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me if there are any third party remote control release systems for the GX200?

I've been looking around and the nearest I think I've have been is on Hama's site.

Any feed back would be welcome.
All the best,

Phil

Phil, I don't know about those Hama. But they seem very interesting, as they are wireless!

I remember some cheap one's, chinese I think, that weren't suppose to be very safe. But I don't know.

Anyway, I bought the Ricoh remote control and I'm sactisfied so far. If you wanna try it just give me a "call" ;-)

See ya!

Hi Rui,

The one from Ricoh seems to be great for most things, but it wont do for my main reason for wanting a remote. I need one to take photos of myself holding my catches (that is when I catch something worth snapping). If you remember, some time ago I was looking at the Optio W90, the reason was that Pentax do a remote control release for it, a waterproof one at that and that would be ideal. I wouldn't have to worry so much about things getting wet while holding a carp.

On that page I put a link to there is a remote that caught my eye, the Hama CA-1 Wireless Remote Control Release. Am I right in thinking that the GX200 USB also has something to do with a CA-1? If so maybe that model might just work. They do not say anything on there site though about if it will work with Ricoh cameras. Think I'll try and e-mail them and see what they say. BTW, the release from Ricoh connects to the USB port doesn't it?
All the best,

Phil

CA-1 Cable switch
This is a cable switch to operate the camera shutter. Allows half-push and full-push operations. 65 cm total length (from grip end to connector end)
Via the small USB port.

Phil, I'm not sure how and where you wanna set you camera, or if you go fishing on a boat or land. But also remember you can set the camera for interval shooting, so you can catch great photos of you getting the fish, not only posing with it ;-)

You can set your camera on a tripod, or something like this on a boat?

Another thing to consider might be if you fish alone? Maybe you need some photo assistent?
(like a plastic bag covering the remote?)

Hi Rui,

As I only fish from shore and on lakes a boat is out of the question. I have and use a tripod and that does it's job just fine. As for the timed interval shooting, yes, I remember you explaining that feature to me and yes, as a last resort it could be used, but for that I would need a super obliging carp and those my friend are few and far between as you can see in the photo. Less than a second after this photo was taken that carp had flipped out of my grasp and was back on the carp-mat, in fact you can see it already curling it's body ready to flip.

Another thing is that the Ricoh remote is not quite long enough and the actual trigger grip is not so friendly when you are trying to hold (balance) an un-obliging pissed-off carp. With a remote like something from Hama you can have it in one of your hands at the same time as you're holding the carp.

As for a photo assistent, , why do you think I take Fernanda fishing    (kiding ok) I very rarely go one my own, but I have learnt from the past that Murphy's Law does exist.

You know I was thinking along the same way as Rui with Interval timer but gave up because it can't be set in MY SETTING's
Because as soon as you OK your settings. You have just turned Interval off.

So there are three options:
1) Lengthen the cable of the Ricoh CA-1
2) Bring a friend & train them in your camera ways of how you would like the shot.
3) Buy a HAMA remote cable, try it out & tell us if it fries the camera or works a treat.

I had a look at the site & it has nothing about Ricoh when put into there search box. http://www.hama.co.uk/tools/advanced_search/index.hsp

Electronics being electronics, I'm sure it can be done. Up to 30 meters out & CLICK, that's ya shot..

Be warned. Every camera company screws together there OWN operating system for their cameras.

If a Ricoh GX200 accepts a signal from a Ricoh CA-1 to half press & fire from USB. Then why not go wireless? Good luck..

Cheers Phil,

Going to give Hama a call tomorrow and see if I can find out something. Would really be great if one of their systems work with the GX200 (and other Ricohs).

This remote control issue has been a key point with my faffing about in making up my mind which camera to get. To be honest, until Rui showed me his GX200 I was on the way to buying something in the lines of a big SLR as it's not just fishing photos I like to take.

Once I saw what it could do and after reading about how much it is more like a pro camera but in a compact body I thought it I would be better off with one due to it's minute size.

Let's see what the guys at Hama say tomorrow. I would think if they haven't got something for Ricoh it might pay them to do something.
All the best,

Phil

Well, just got off the phone to Hama and, alas, no joy. They do not do anything that might have fitted Ricoh nor are they planning to in the future. Pity. So it's back to the hunt.

Found 2 sites of some interest but still not too sure if they have what I am looking for, maybe some of the other members have an idea if these would do.
