GRX M Flash problems

Postby aslives » Fri Aug 03, 2012 5:44 pm

Hi there,
I recently updated my firmware to 1.51 and have no problems except I can't get the camera to flash anymore. I've tried everything - am certain continuous mode, bracketing etc... are off - no flash.

What now has me concerned is that when I go to playback and get information, it actually seems to think the flash fired - for exaple I see an "M 1/2" suggesting that the camera thinks the manual flash fired.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Hi aslives and welcome here! I'm afraid, it sounds like a HW problem and not something FW related. Because of the flash entry in EXIF, the camera clearly thinks the flash has been fired, except it was not. I would suggest you to visit your camera dealer and try another GXR body with your M mount module. Hope it helps?

Yeah - I think you are correct. I'm gonna take it in tomorrow. One thing though - this happened right after I installed the 1.51 firmware update. I think it must be correlation and not causation as I haven't see anyone else with the same issue...

thanks! ASL

I just noticed it today that I am having a similar problem. I'm wandering if anyone else running 1.51 is seeing the same problem.

Haven't updated to fw 1.51. Have you tried any other modules to see if it's only the M module causing the problem?

Does the flash sound like its firing? As in do you hear any popping noises?

I tried with my A12 50mm macro and same problem. I don't hear any sound coming from the flash. The EXIF data show that the flash fired, but I don't see the flash firing. I'm not sure if it is a hardware or firmware problem.

So I contacted Ricoh today (I live in Tokyo) and they said that it shouldn't be a problem with the firmware. I took the camera back today worked with the sales guy to see if the problem was in the M Mount or in the body. Swapped out the mount first, no flash, swapped out the body - bingo - flash as expected.

Firmware is 1.44 and I'm not updating it again until Ricoh's next release.....just in case....

I have 1.51 and do not have this problem, be it with M-module or the S10, everything working normal.

So, you downgraded to 1.44 and now the camera works again? Haven't used the flash on my GXR in ages.... I'll test it tomorrow.

Just a quick update. I brought the camera back to the store, they did some test with and found out that it is a hardware problem. The unit is still under warranty, so I sent in the unit for warranty repair.
