Hi Pavel, thank you for your useful experiment and for referring to my pages with converter experiments.

I would like to add one thing:

Peter Watson, UK, sent an e-mail in response to my page and told me of his converter experiments with P10, HA-3, and TCON 14. I asked him whether I can publish his results on my page but regrettably got not answer.

So, I would like to mention a few details. He somehow managed to squeeze the HA-3 on the P10 and also added a step up ring 43-46mm to extend the HA-3. The TCON 14 has 1.45 magnification and thus offers a focal length of 435mm as Pavel already stated. Peter bought all this from ebay for little money.

He also sent two photos, one of the moon and one of a water airplane in the air -- see the latter below.

So, here is the credit that Peter deserves!

Best regards, Gerd

You are welcome Gerd! You started it, we only continue ;) There are many things that could be done P10 and extension lenses. The weather was not very good today and I was not able to take anything useful to show you the usability of P10+TCON converter, maybe except this pic (taken with TCON14b)...

It's 100% crop, so not useful for printing or anything else serious. In addition, it was taken handheld and through the dirty window. Not a very good combination. Tomorrow, I will try it one more time with open window and tripod ;) I wish my LR3 trial is not expired. It's converted with SP Pro, but from what I saw, LR3 should be able to extract even more details out of the P10 DNG. Maybe next time?

Thanks for the info, Brad. When you say heavy, is it as big and heavy as Pavel's TCON-14B which pretty much makes it impractical for normal usage? Here is his pic of it from his other thread:

Here is another "moon" try. This time I tried TCON14, TCON14b and P10 at 300mm and no tele extension...

And here are couple of TCON14 photos I took and processed today. The day started with heavy fog but then we got excellent Autumn day full of sun and surprisingly warm weather for this date...

If you are interested, TCON14 is usable from 85mm of the native P10 focal length. Lower focal lengths suffer from vignetting. Here is the list of native focal lengths and extended lengths with TCON14
Code: Select all
P10   TCON14
85    123
105   152
135   196
200   290
300   435
The advantage of using TCON14 with smaller distances than just 300mm is the ability to use longer longer focal lengths than native with smaller aperture numbers (not in all cases!). Let's say you want to use 300mm. The lowest aperture number for 300mm is f5.6. But if you use 200mm + TCON14, the focal length is nearly 300mm (290mm) and you may benefit from f4.5!

Hello Pavel,
Sorry I have taken so long in replying about the modified HA-3 for using a wide angle lens.
The photographs I am posting are with the standard P-10 at 28mm and with my Jackar 0.60 46mm fitted on my modified HA-3. Well I am not the best of photographers but I hope that they will show you what can be done.
Any questions then please ask and I will try to answer them as best I can.
Peter.

Hi, I apologize in advance for my English,
I want to ask is there a big teleconverter of 1,45 x as 6x or 7x that take place in the Ricoh GXR P10. I also use TCON14 and am very pleased. Thanks in advance.

Hello Andreev_VS
From the experimenting that I did with telephoto lenses I would say that it would be hit and miss with 2 and 3 x lenses and if you bought them and they did not work then it would cost you a lot of money. The TCON14 takes you up to 435mm and that is not perfect but the results are quite good for little money. You would need a tripod for that length of lens and I personally would not bother trying it.
Peter.

Hi andreev_vs and welcome on the board! I'm afraid, Peter is right. 2x or even 3x extension lenses usually don't work very well if not used with the lens/camera they were designed for. And they are expensive. And if you find some cheep lenses, they are most probably rubbish not worth the asking price. I think the TCON14 is the best you can get for your money.
