Do you plug your camera into the PC or remove the card from camera & read it with a card reader?
If you use a USB, do you use Ricoh Gate La software?

This is just for Ricoh cameras. :)

Before my PCMCIA card reader died off, I usually removed the card form camera. But now I'm connecting the camera via USB. I'm not using Ricoh software for anything. I'm afraid, it's not worth the troubles, not to mention it's not required ;)

I generally use a no cable type USB SDHC adapter similar to this one -- http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-USB-SDHC-Mem ... 630wt_1137

This type of reader packs easier for travelling and no cables to tangle or roll up.

I don't use any software just click and drag the files in Windows, I don't even use explorer just drag it similar to a Mac. The netbook I have has a SDHC slot so if I take that on trips I don't even need the adapter. Once the files are on the PC I tend to use Xnview to browse them.

I would happily revert to cable and used to do this, I guess you could wear out either sets of contacts, so I can't see a clear reason for sticking to either method.
