New Sandisk card very slow

Postby garry71 » Fri Oct 14, 2011 6:29 pm

I've been using a 2 gig Sandisk Ultra SD card in my GRD for 2 years with no problems.
I bought another one last week, and it takes about 10 seconds just to write a jpeg. It even takes 4 times longer than the old one to format.

Just tried it in my Palm pda, and it shows it as being made by Sandisk, the same as it does for the old card, so it looks genuine.
Has anyone else had any similar problems with a recent card?
Needless to say I've lost the receipt!!

hmm, very unusual, when you have formatted the card have you done this in the Ricoh?
I'd give that a go if it was formatted elsewhere.

Also I often check the SD card with disk manager in XP or Win7 to see what type of partition and format them there.
I think they should be FAT32. I have had issues with speed of cards and various brands.
These guys offer a free (for home use) Partition manager, http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
You could use it to help check the card and reformat it but for a final format I would do that in the camera.

My Sigma DP2 is very fussy. The current card takes ages to write a RAW.

It was formatted in the GRD, I only format cards in whatever they're used in.
Even a Jessops own brand card is faster than this new one!

Anyway, I found the receipt and got my money back this morning, so panic over.

Cheers Tim.

I had sort of the same with a PNY card in my GX100. The card works flawless in other cams. But the GX got very slow even to start.

Not sure why maybe some incompatible timing.

Garry, I'm sorry to say this, but maybe you have a fake Sandisk card? The sad truth is that there are many fake SD cards circulating around. And their typical issue is a very slow writing. I would suggest you to closely inspect both cards. Do they appear the same (font, script, size of letters, graphics, etc.)?

Hello Pavel, sorry I forgot to update this thread.
I took the card back and got a refund, but the card was an SDHC and not a normal SD card. The package said it was a direct replacement for SD, but SDHC does not work in the GRD1.
So if anyone needs a new card for a GRD1, make sure it's a normal SD.

Thanks for the replies
