So the posts are obvious but what was their purpose (Andy, you probably know the answer so feel free to post a red herring or 2).

Are they for some oyster or other fish (red herrings :D ) or crustacean farming?

That's a logical but wrong guess. They were there to catch something though...but not 'fishy'.

oh, were they anchor points for nets to stop Mines that floated in from the sea during WWII ?

Hi Richard,
I do indeed know the reason for the planting of this now long-dead forest...though when I too Renate there this spring, she failed to guests what the Story behind these...:-)
Neider Herrings (Red or otherwise) nor any other Swimming fish or device was the reason for planten these...
