A Day at the Races

Postby Wiener » Sun Aug 02, 2015 12:31 pm

A few from the Rowing Regatta at Shieldaig, Wester Ross, Scotland. I was invited along by my daughter who has taken this up as her sporting challenge. A real friendly bunch and a good day out was had by all! The GR is a tad wide for catching the moment, but I tried!

Very nice shots Andy, actually I think you used the focal length very well - there are shots with a nice balance between the foreground and background, and in this respect #8 ("after the last race") is my favorite. Nice way to tell the story, and the pics look even better in the expanded view.

You had some interesting light there, too - vibrant colors with a stormy background. I guess you people can't escape the rain for too long, eh? ;)

Nice series Andy. The St Ayles Skiffs have lovely lines. I'll forward a link to the Chanonry rowers (who were there). The results board is interesting - if it were a sailing race, the smaller the total the better the placing; with rowing I have a feeling it is the other way around.

Don't pipers bring rain
I like that shot of after the last race, & how the light drops off to the rear of the image.

Hi quester, thanks for your comments!
It was a nice light day (when it was not getting almost to dull to see!) and these beams of sunshine when there was 90% cloud cover really made these colourful boats stand out... :D
And yes, and particularily this 'summer', the rain is pretty much guaranteed!
All the best,
Andy

Hi Richard,
these boats are indeed lovely and are really looked after with care and pride.
Chanonry were indeed there but not it would seem in great numbers given the number of DNS (did not start?) on the score board.
I thought Avoch did themselves proud given they are still finding their feet, although well beaten by Coigach who were superbly fit and professional.

Pipers are certainly sweetest outdoors, though I'm not sure about their abilities in the rain department. If they would distract the biting midge, then they would make a fortune mind!

A nice light indeed. My favourites are ##8 and also 4. The combination of sunlit details against stormy dark background is magical.

As about the 'biting midges', I had the pleasure to meet them and do not understand how you can survive their friendliness. :)

Nice serie. I really like the composition and colors on 1-4-6.

Nifty little beast this camera is!
