Redundant Smokers

Postby Wiener » Fri Aug 10, 2012 9:08 pm

I guess these chimneys are not used any more; a throwback to the times when every room in a house had a coal fire. Hard work (and not environmentally friendly) to keep this row of smokers in action!
Playing a little with my GXR-M module. Here it was coupled with my Minolta 50mm f1.4 which I think could get a lot more use! Great feeling to get all my old glass back into operation! :D

Very nice Andy! Unusual in Italy to see all these chimneys on a row...

Yes, this is common here and rare elsewhere...we did not go for double glazing or ceramic ovens for room heating like mainland continentals...just had lots of draughty fireplaces! Think it was to make sure we suffered on earth prior to redemption later...but I could be wrong on this last point!

Super picture..somewhere in Fortrose? Maybe near the Coop?? Great B&W and a great tribute to whoever molded those pots - just look at he detail.

Thank you! Though to be honest my return to b&w is recent, my Olympus 35 SP which I used that purpose having died a long time back. Pity though, as it took some of the sharpest prints I ever saw...it's 42mm f1.7 lens was really special!

Richard

No Richard, not Black Isle, but opposite Inverness Cathedral. Just caught the last rays of the setting sun on the chimney.
The detail of those late Victorian/Edwardian chimney pots can indeed be amazing...real works of art! If they were not so big I am sure there would be a good antique market for them... :)
Glad you liked this example!

Just for interest I attach another photograph taken at the same time but of another building close by.
If the picture is not too dark you can count the chimney pots. This was Bishop Eden's 'palace' by the way! It is now intigrated with the cinema/theatre compex beyond...one of my favourite venues when I am in Scotland! :)
