your picture reminded me of a poem by a Scot by the name of Alastair Reid. I hope nobody minds my intruding with his words on this competition thread...
The Colour of Herring.
I read in the fishbooks that the herring
is black-backed and silver-sided,
is blue-flecked and silver-faceted,
is gray-green shot with silver,
is black and green and silver,
is blue and glass.
I find the herring in my hands
has all the silver of the evening,
all the blue of the bay,
all the green of the deep sea over the side.
The black may easily be in my mood.
The silver certainly flakes my sleeve.
But over my hands in its dying moment spills
the herring's blood
which, silver, green, black and blue aside,
runs unmistakably red.
Seems to fit the thread fine though!
