New Sony sensor 1 inch...

Postby opal » Fri Jun 08, 2012 4:01 am

I hope Ricoh will use the new Sony sensor 1 inch for the future GRD V.
A 35 mmm 1.4 could be a great idea but in the same body or slimmer…..wait and see.

I looked at the samples from this sensor over here -- http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-dsc-rx100/6

I thought the lack of noise at high ISO was exceptionally good.
Team it with a better Ricoh lens and we might be onto something.
I thought the Sony lens a bit average here IMO.

The issue with Sony is that they can't make a decent lens and do not have a clue about UI.
So no matter what this camera does, it won't do it. They do make a heck of a sensor but don't know what to do with it.
As far as Ricoh feeling threatened by this...

Well, the lens in the new Sony is a Zeiss Sonnar. Zeiss certainly knows how to make lenses ;)
I'm sceptical about 20 MP in such a small sensor, but the high ISO shots are amazing considering MP count and sensor size.

I agree with the UI, though. Not to speak from their odd feature that your images seem to be gone once you shoot video (although they aren't).

wok,
The lens remains to be seen. Pana/Leica has a name but that's it. They may be good but they ain't Leica.
I think the same goes for the Sony/Zeiss. A real Zeiss lens would cost more then the camera sells for.

At any rate ya get that wonderful UI and that makes for a great used market in a short time.

I recently had a Sony DSC HX9V thrust into my hands literally, i was best man at a wedding and the groom told me to get some pictures.
Well despite not having a moment of instruction ( the groom didnt even know that you could take out the SD card) I managed to get some nice shots. Its a real PnS camera . No RAW though.Images can crop nicely.
From what I can see of the new DSC RX100 no RAW here either.
Same time as I had the Sony DSCHX9Vgoing my wife was using the GX100.PnS style here too.
I liked the Sony but I still prefer my GX100. The Ricoh is a camera, the Sony you trust to the best man at your wedding...

Paul, interesting story. I will admit that I do raw always. That does have the following exception. I can get intoxicated by the jpegs from the GRD4....and 3. It's the only camera I ever considered doing jpeg.
So the Sony may not put off too many people if it's a jpeg camera.
I was told today that the lens is supposed to be excellent and the processing engine very fast and high quality.
That really leaves the interface. No hope.

It will be an interesting camera and we should know how much so soon.

the sensor is bigger than the sensor of the ricoh GRD IV but it has also 20 mp, so at the end the advantages are less than one could hope when he read about the big sensor......

I was thinking more along the line if Ricoh buys this sensor to use in the GRD IV.
Larger sensor puts more constraint on lens design, then more push for larger size which we don't want, so that's the compromise factor.
Maybe if the V had this sensor and a 28 or 40mm lens which was max aperture f2.4 again like the GRD I/II. Perhaps that would be acceptable?
