Leica R lenses via R to M adapter and A12 M-mount ?

Postby nbpf » Tue Dec 06, 2011 10:27 pm

I'm new to this forum and considering buying a GXR. I have three R-mount lenses from the 80ies:

- 24mm f/2.8 Elmarit R
- 75-200mm f/4.5 Vario-Elmar R
- 60mm f/2.8 Macro-Elmarit R

Is it possible (does it make sense) to use these lenses with the A 12 M-mount ? Any experience with these lenses on the GXR ?

I understand that I would need a R to M mount adapter (Novoflex ?) and that the 75-200mm zoom might be too heavy to put the GXR on a tripod.

Thanks, nicola

Hi Nicola and welcome to the forum!
Does the 75-200mm have a tripod collar? If so, you would have no trouble using it on a tripod. Otherwise, it's probably too heavy for the GXR's tripod socket to safely support it, although you could handhold it in bright light. Novoflex adapters are expensive. You might look into those made by JIN Finance (eBay) in China, or Adriano Lolli COMA in Italy for much cheaper alternatives. ;)

Thanks Ken, I have meanwhile bought the GXR with the S10 module and the VF-2. I plan to play a little bit around with the camera and then order the A12 M-mount module or the A12 50mm module in January.

Just as a matter of interest, what is the sensor "crop factor", please?

I have "M" and "R" lenses ranging from 28mm to 90mm so I'm presuming that the sensor will multiply the effective focal length by something in the order of 1.5........?

Cheers Ken.

Not sure whether I'll go for this camera but, if I do, I'll have to also acquire a 15mm Voigtlander as I love wide angle. Widest I have right now is 28mm f2.8 Elmarit-M (+ same in R) which will become 42mm. Nice for a standard lens but not so good for getting in close on street scenes. I could always use the M6TTL (or my GR1s) as the wide option, though......

If Ricoh wants to do something REALLY interesting, they could always develop a "full frame" version to challenge the M9 :o

Paul, the 12 or 15mm Voigtlander are really shining together with the M mount. Due to the crop and the shifted micro lenses there is no colourdrift at the borders. A full frame sensor makes trouble together with the mostly symmetrical old lens designs from the Leica M. The retrofocus design of SLR lenses are easy to handle.

The Leica M9 suffers from the very short register and the wider surface of the sensor, a new firmware update brought some efforts.

Nicola,
If you're still looking for a Leica R to M adapter, here's a link to some on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-R-LR-Lens ... 0125079136

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-R-LR-lens ... 3239754876

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-R-LR-lens ... 7420005477

And this HK seller claims that this, more expensive, one is the "premium version with no lens play":

I have a Kipon M to NEX adapter and can confirm that it indeed has no play and is of good quality
