GRII stopped recognizing memory cards

Postby billcrandall » Fri May 28, 2010 9:20 pm

My GRII suddenly doesn't know when an SD card is in it. It can take pics on the internal memory, but with two separate cards, when I try to format it says 'insert card'. What to do, other than send to Ricoh?

Hi Bill and welcome here! I'm afraid, if it's not caused by the memory card itself, there is probably nothing you can do, except to send it to Ricoh. Are you sure it's not caused by the card (or cards) you tried?

Bill,

the only thing I can suggest is to make sure the contacts on your SD cards are clean. Its unlikely you have two cards with dirty contact I guess but its something simple you can check yourself. Do you have a way of checking the cards elsewhere? - perhaps your laptop has a SD card reader and you can ensure the card/s are working? This then rules out the SD cards as the problem. You could get a USB type card reader if your PC/Mac does not have one.

Hi, thanks a lot for the replies. The cards seem to work fine in a card reader.

The only thing I did notice is that on one of the cards, one of the thin slivers of plastic that separates the contact points was broken. Which has happened before, the SD cards are fragile in that sense. But I suppose there could be a small piece of debris inside the camera's card slot or something. Either causing the problem, or as a result of the problem.

Well, I'll be having a repair guy look at it, probably shipping it off to Ricoh today... :(. May have to buy a GRIII to tide me over... ;).

FYI, an update - yesterday I took to a local repair shop. The guy said one of the contacts in the card slot was a bit out of line with the others (somehow it was a bit farther back, therefore not making contact). He managed to push it back into place and it works now, but I assume it's a fragile fix at best. I'll probably still have to send to Ricoh, hope they can maybe replace the entire card slot or something.

I confess that I am keeping my GRD II for this reason, should my GRD III need repair I'll have it to use. Even thought the GRD II seems to be considered the lesser of the GRD range I still like it and with PP I've seen some excellent results.
