Help please LCD screen cover

Postby pjphoto59 » Sat Jun 27, 2009 5:03 pm

I have a GX100 and a VF-1. One of the many reasons for buying the GX100 was to have the option to use the VF-1 as I have some difficulty in using the LCD. I am OK with the LCD in gloomy conditions, but I have a problem with it in bright light. The main problem is reflections on the LCD. I have a grey beard and it shows up very bright in the reflection! I have ruled out wearing a black balaclava on fashion grounds, so I wonder if anyone can recommend a stick-on plastic cover that really does reduce reflections.

Best regards

Hi Peter,

I think the solution for you might be the url=http://www.delkin.com/products/popupshades/mini/]Delkin Pop-Up shade[/url]? When attached to camera, it effectively blocks the sun rays and reflections so you can clearly see what's on the LCD. The only problem is that it makes the camera a bit thicker.

I just tried the 3" one with GX200 but it's too big. So I think you need to get a smaller one (2.5"). And even then you will most probably have to adapt it to be usable with attached EVF! The problem is that EVF bottom part is paced too close to the LCD frame so it may collide with the pop-up shade. Just try to align pop-up shade with attached EVF before actually sticking it up. Hope this helps?

This thing reminds me of the TLR type shade but instead of being vertical mounted its horizontal. Seems there is nothing new in photography!! I guess if it does the job why reinvent the wheel?

I remember a discussion in dpreview ricoh talk forum, where someone refered the "Giottos" antiglare screen, and the "boxwave" too (maybe not so good as the first one?).

I'm also very interested in this, but I couldn't understand yet which is the right one (reference/dimension)for GX200

Hi Pavel,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I do not really fancy adding more thickness to the camera. For one thing it would not fit in the case any more.

Also, I am not sure if the shade would really stop the (light coloured) reflection of my face, but when we get a sunny day I will make one out of cardboard to see if it works.

I was really hoping for some stick-on plastic with a matte non reflective surface. Maybe those Giotto ones do that?

I wrote to Giottos asking about a screen to the GX200. They reply with a "no" :(

I'm really interested in this antiglare screens. I have difficulties to see the LCD because of my face reflection too, and I think that this could be a good solution.

Maybe they don't have a Ricoh specific screen, but I'm quite sure an universal screen with proper size should work. If you check this page:
http://www.giottos.com/SP.htm

There are listed various screens including their dimensions. So all you have to do is to measure the available space around the GX200 screen (don't forget about EVF size if you want to use it).

Hi Pavel,

Yes the Giotto screen looks as though it could be a good solution, although certainly not cheap (£25 from Amazon in UK).

Being rigid glass it would not work for my GX100 at present, I dropped the camera a few months ago and made a nasty dent/bulge at the bottom edge of the LCD frame. So the frame is not flat and the LCD is not rectangular. I could send it to Ricoh and get it fixed, but I have never done so as the functionality of the camera is not affected.

It would be nice to hear from anyone who has fitted the Giotto screen. Does it it really cut reflections and if so, how much?

Thanks again for the link.

Hi Peter,

You can find these screens on ebay and for very reasonable price.

OK, I will measure my GX200 and try to buy one screen just to test it. It sounds like a good solution for LCD reflections. So I'm curious to see how well it works.

Here's where I read about those screens:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=31916420

So it seems that Giottos can be a good solution... Pavel, I'll do it the same, not sure if before or after August (vacations aproaching and I don't wanna mess with post office ;-))
