00afines, two more things that come to my mind...

Did you try the slower AF mode introduced in latest firmware? And at second, are you sure you were not too close to the photographed subject (under 7cm)? That would explain the back focus.

Also, don't forget, that A12 uses much larger sensor with much smaller depth of field. It's much harder to make and keep the things in focus, especially in the Macro mode with very small area of sharpness (unlike with small sensor cameras like GRD or GX, CX). You will have to stop down the aperture significantly to get the same or similar depth of field. And if you are trying to take the handheld macro shot, use continuous mode. No matter how steady hands you have, you can easily lost the focus point with just slight hand movement.

Pavel:

Me too, using Target mode on AF generally will help improving focusing but not very much on low light macro exposure. :) Normally on macro exposure I used Multi focus with Target Mode and use preset FN2 button to switch to Manual focus to take exposure, if it's still not in fine focus I will fine tune in Manual focus before taking exposure, hope this'll help, good luck. :P

Am I alone in thinking this is very bad?

It all sounds pretty scary to me. :o

No te preocupes, a mandar.
