Hi Andy! I agree with the others that your cheap CA-1 is the genuine article & that most of the problems with it are ones I've experienced. However, I have not had the problem you stated about the battery cover being too loose & sliding off. I just tried mine & it's tight. Maybe you should request a replacement--especially since you paid such a premium price. When I got my CA-1 last November it malfunctioned every once in awhile, but this was cleared up with a FW update and I haven't had any trouble since. One thing I did which helps counter the stiff cable was to attach a piece of adhesive-backed velcro (the smooth part) just below the on-off switch, and attached the corresponding rough part of the velcro to the top of my tripod. That way, when I'm not using the CA-1, it's parked in a place that I can easily grab when I'm ready to shoot. Also, to avoid the rundown battery syndrome, I always remove the battery when I'm finished. Ken
